Air Pollution and Hypertension

Breathing in smoke increases the risk of developing lethal complications like, asthma, preeclampsia and other infections. Moreover, studies have suggested that there is a link between reduced birth rates of infants and exposure to air pollution.

Air pollution jeopardizes the health of humans and damages the ecosystem. According to the recent standards, a large part of the whole population is not living in a healthy environment.
However, breathing in polluted environment can be as harmful to the pregnant women, as inhaling a cigarette smoke. Another study suggested that, the considerable percentage of cases of low birth weight could be easily prevented if the air pollution is reduced. According to the recent findings, exposure to the air pollutants can lead to extensive risk for developing high blood pressure at some point in your pregnancy.

There are numerous pollutants that are found in air pollution but the two basic types of pollutants include sulfur dioxide and carbon monoxide. Other pollutants include dust, acid, soil particles and metals. All these pollutants are inhalable and released from forest fires and industries. On the other hand, carbon monoxide is released from the car exhaust, and sulfur dioxide is produced from industries and power plants.

According to, Xiaohui Xu, M.D., Ph.D., an assistant professor of epidemiology in the colleges of Public Health and Health Professions and Medicine; "That is why we wanted to do this research. Hypertension (high blood pressure), in particular, is associated with increased morbidity and mortality, causing a lot of problems for the mother and fetus, including preterm delivery."

There comes a point in everyone’s life, when they experiences the ‘ups’ and ‘downs’ but a few people with a mood disorder experience it with a higher intensity and for a much longer time period. The condition that mood disorders cause to people includes a feeling of; depression, disturbed physical health, prolonged emotions that depressingly affects people mentally.
Depression and bipolar disorder which is known as manic depression are both serious medical illnesses but are treatable. The people who have bipolar disorder, experiences depression and usually feels really high. The ‘highs’ get uncontrolled and manic person behave in a hasty manner.
Depression- the most common mood disorder in which is person feels very low. The symptoms may include, tiredness, altered eating patterns, sleeping problems, hopelessness, thoughts of suicide and an incapability to have fun. These mood disorders can be treated through counseling, but in extreme cases, proper medical assistance is advised.

Gene Therapy! A Plausible Cure for Genetic Diseases:

Finding new ways for curing diseases have always been the sole motive for medical researchers. One of the most current researches is curing via gene therapy. Gene therapy is a medical procedure that inserts gene into patient’s cells and tissues, which replaces the toxic mutant allele with a functional one. Although, gene therapy has promising results, but there is always room for further research in this matter.
A research was carried out in Italy, on the gene therapy where bone marrow stem cells of the patients were infused with the ‘virus’ carrying extracts of DNA with the correct instructions. For this purpose, the scientists selected three children and injected the virus, before the disease started to show symptoms. This experiment showed positive results as children were more interested in living their normal lives. Nonetheless, the patients were also monitored closely. The success of the gene therapy assures that other diseases can be treated in the same manner.

Researchers in Italy implanted modified gene which will eliminate the diseased gene in children suffering from diseases like Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome and Metachromatic Leukodystrophy. In Metachromatice Leukodystrophy, infants appear healthy physically but their development starts to diminish early in their childhood because a part of their brain gets destroyed in this disease, while Wiskott-Aldritch Syndrome causes a faulty immune system.

Unhealthy Life Style and Depression

It is commonly noticed that people are going for chocolates and indulge in sweet items when they are suffering from the condition of depression.  But they are not familiar that the intake of sweet items can enhance depression.
According to research analysis, a bad diet can actually make you depressed. Researchers have gone through the relationship between food and depression, by observing the eating habits of more than 40,000 middle aged working men and women.
Those people who were not suffering from this condition had started to suffer with depression because of change in eating habits.
Researchers have concluded that around 51% of the people, vulnerable to depression eat junk food items like pizzas, burgers, hot dogs etc. Fizzy drinks, pasta, white rice and bagels are some of the other foods which are a big sign of depression in men and women.
Those people who are maintaining a healthy life style are at a minimum risk of developing different diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases.

COMPUTER AIDED DRUG DESIGN (CADD):

Computer Aided Drug Design (CADD) has provided a powerful foundation for the rational design of drugs and has been used at various stages of drug development. The most common CADD techniques that are used in drug design are Molecular Dynamics (MD) and Quantitative Structure Activity Relationships (QSAR).

In the field of drug design, molecular dynamics (MD) is used to study various macromolecules as well as macro-molecule small molecule interactions. This technique provides dynamic information of macromolecular processes. Quantitative Structure Activity Relationships (QSAR) establishes a mathematical correlation between the chemical structures of a set of compounds as well as biological activities.

Recent technological developments in biochemistry, biomedical science, and nanotechnology have made computer-aided drug design and delivery systems possible on a molecular basis.

Bentham Science Journal “Current Computer-Aided Drug Design” aims to publish all the latest developments in drug design based on computational techniques. General Misconceptions Regarding Supplement Usage

There are many misconceptions about vitamins and the health benefits they offer. Although, vitamins play a vital role in keeping a healthy body, over-dosage can actually cause more damage than benefit. For majority of the people, taking vitamin supplements is known to be the best way to get vitamin supplements for their bodies, instead of eating healthy food.  However, high dose of vitamin supplements should not be taken unless medically recommended.

Vitamin supplements are usually misused, and are taken without professional advice, to treat conditions such as cold, bone weakness, or to stabilize the effects of a stressful lifestyle. Even though, the popular belief considers vitamin supplements to be amiracle drug, they are in fact organic compounds that are involved in the functions of metabolism.
Balanced diet and sufficient levels of essential nutrients are important for complex processes in the body. Vitamins as supplement are introduced into our bodies at levels that could not be a replacement of healthier eating habits.
Sometimes vitamin supplements are required for our bodies, nonetheless taking multivitamins is a better option at a recommended dietary level, rather than taking single nutrient supplement’s or high-dose multivitamins.

Dengue Fever: A Lethal Killer

Dengue fever is a lethal viral infection transmitted through biting of a particular type of mosquito known as “Aedes Aegypti”. The virus attacks blood cell, spleen, liver and results in a low white blood cell count and reduces the number of platelets (blood clotting components) in the body. Severe headache, high fever, abdominal pain, vomiting, body ache, loss of appetite, cough, sore throat are some of the symptoms of dengue fever. This fever usually lasts for 2 weeks.

Once diagnosed with this fever, careful steps should be taken as this fever can also result in death of the patient. High fever should be controlled by consuming paracetamol, avoiding the use of antibiotics as they would result in further decreasing the number of white blood cells and platelets in the patient’s body.
Precaution is better than cure, should be our motto for a healthier environment. Dengue is a fever that kills. It is transferred through stagnant water as well, so precautionary measures should be taken regarding this. Regular blood tests should be done in order to monitor the count of platelets and blood cells. Mosquito sprays should be done in dengue affected areas.

Inflammation: An Innate Immune System

Inflammation is the body’s effort to prevent the body against external or internal pathogens. When the body faces a danger, it reacts by inflating the particular body part, and begins the healing process. ‘Inflation’ comes from the Latin word, “inflammo” meaning “set alight or ignite”.

It is a part of the body’s innate immune system. For example, if the wrist gets hurt, the body’s response is to inflate that body part so that the healing starts. Inflammation helps to heal the wounds quickly and effectively. When we see an inflammation in our body, out immediate response is to bring it down, but we should keep in mind that the basic aim of the inflammation is to heal the wound, which is harming our body. Inflammation is of two types; acute and chronic. Acute inflammation can be characterized by pain, heat swelling and redness on the injury. This reaction of the body is carried out, as soon as the body receives an injury or infection. Acute inflammation rises abruptly, treats the injured tissue and recedes back, but if the acute inflammation gets prolonged, it turns into chronic. Chronic inflammation stays on the host tissue for a longer time. It takes time, sometimes years or months to heal.

Bentham Science Publishers is one of the leading STM publishing companies. It publishes 116 online and print journals, 150 plus open access journals, and related print/online book series. One of the eBooks is “Surgical Inflammation”. Readers of this book will have the chance of gaining a unique perspective about of the pathophysiological mechanisms involved in the multiple inflammatory conditions.

“A Unique Way to Perform Cholestrol Test”

Researchers in India have proposed a method for keeping track of the cholesterol levels in heart patients.  It is a unique method of performing cholesterol test with the help of a digital camera.
Digital camera then performs the total cholesterol test by taking snapshots of the back of the patient’s hands. In this test, blood samples are not used. The snapshots of the new patients are cropped and compared with the existing images within the database of cholesterol levels.
The total cholesterol test is a decent way to keep the initial check of different cholesterol problems. Although a detailed analysis would be required in order to differentiate between the types of cholesterol: HDL and LDL. Analysis of the triglycerides is the more accurate health assessment for patients with high total cholesterol levels. The cholesterol levels are revealed with the help of skin image analysis.

THE LEGACY OF JACK THE RIPPER

Jack the Ripper is counted amongst the most notorious criminals of the era. He had created havoc in the East London, where people used to fear with his name. He was a faceless outlaw, who led the London Police on their toes. Still to date, the officials are working on the criminal’s face and identity. His murders were spine-chilling.
He had the city of London verging on the edge of their seats because he murdered at least five prostitutes from August 7th to September 10th of 1888. The prostitutes were murdered within a mile of each other, their bodies were mutilated. The police had no clue of the criminal, but the confession letters which had been sent to the London Metropolitan Police Service (Scotland Yard) provided detailed explanation of the committed murders. The letters also disclosed the names of those people which he was planning for the future murder. Hundreds of men had been arrested as suspects, but were allowed to go because of lack of evidences.
The murders were very sadistic, giving the impression of an ill-minded person. The forensic department worked on the letters which they received, but, most of the letters were believed to be sent by those people who wanted to harass the Police department.
The case of Jack the Ripper is still under investigation by the Scotland Yard. Even after 125 years, the case is as faceless as Jack the Ripper himself.
Bentham Science Publishers is one of the leading STM Journal Publishers. They have a variety of journals and eBooks available. One of their e-books is “Jack the Writer: A Verbal & Visual Analysis of the Ripper Correspondence. To view the list of all Bentham e-books, visit:

Potential Impacts of Food Borne Illness

Food borne Illness is also known as food poisoning. Food poisoning occurs as a result of contaminated food intake which consists of parasites, viruses, bacteria and other toxins.
These contaminants get inside your body through different resources and make you ill. One of the most common sources of contamination is the infected food handler. These handlers neither wash their hands properly nor wear gloves which is a big health concern. Dirty kitchenware and service utensils are another source of infectivity. The food should be cooked at hot enough temperature and stored in refrigerator at desired temperature to avoid food poisoning.

There are various STM Publishers. The name of Bentham Science Publishers is highly established within the STM publication industry. Bentham Science has various journals and e-books based on food, safety issues related to food and nutrition. To view all these Bentham Journals, visit:
The symptoms of food poisoning start to develop within 2 to 6 hours after eating the contaminated food. The most common symptoms of Food Poisoning include diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, headaches and abdominal cramps.
Most of the food poisoning cases do not need any medical attention and you get recovery after few days of time. But in some cases, if proper safety measures are not taken, can result into severe worse conditions. Different safety measures should be taken in these cases to avoid making this condition even worse.

You should drink plenty of water in order to overcome the fluid losses created by diarrhea and vomiting, avoid caffeinated beverages and dairy products, take light meals instead of heavy diet and get plenty of rest and sleep to help your body for a quick recovery.

Here is the review of the recent eBook of Bentham, “Outcomes Assessment in End – Stage Kidney Disease Measurements and Applications in Clinical Practice”.
With an increase of the population of elderly people in modern society due to advances in medicine and healthcare facilities, there is also an increase in the incidence and duration of chronic illnesses. Similarly, advanced age is considered a significant determinant of depression and poor quality of life. Additionally, the provision of therapies relevant to chronic diseases addresses the issues beyond the concept of cure, bringing to the center the need for a dignified quality of life of patients. An increased interest in the quality of life is observed in patients who suffer from chronic diseases, including those with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD). End-stage kidney disease patients have a high burden of disease affecting their quality of life and dramatically shortening their life expectancy. Therefore, exploring quality of life issues among such patients becomes an essential task in the management of this population.
This volume is written by researchers with a well-rounded understanding of the characteristics and impact of ESKD and provides a penetrating practical discussion to date of alternative approaches for comprehensively measuring the burden of end-stage kidney disease.
